Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Instructor

Qualifications
ALS Certification
- Previous training, experience, and certification or licensure as an ALS-level medical practitioner, preferably as a paramedic
- EMS nurse, or EMS physician
- Five years of active field or medical or clinical experience is preferred
Instructional Education
- Previous training in disciplines of adult learning theory, adult education, and instructional technology
- Significant classroom instructional experience is preferred
Personnel Training
- Previous experience in EMS/prehospital care personnel training, preferably at the ALS level
- Five years of experience is preferred
Medical Dispatching
- Previous work with medical dispatching and communication center operations
- On-line experience with a system utilizing the Advanced MPDS® is preferred
Computer Knowledge
- Previous experience with and knowledge of personal computers
- Ability to perform basic personal computer operations
- Experience with Microsoft® PowerPoint presentation software is preferred
Pre-requisites
EMD Certification
- Attend and complete a basic 24-hour EMD certification course
- Submit a photocopy of the certificate
- Achieve passing examination grade of 85 percent or higher is preferred
Recommendation
- Submit three letters of formal recommendation with one each from your primary employer, training agency management, and physician medical director
- Recommendations that discuss candidate's teaching abilities are preferred
Application and Curriculum Vitae
- Submit a curriculum vitae (formal resume) with a completed EMD Instructor Application (should include, at a minimum, previous work experience and references, as well as personal contact information)
Process for Certification Eligibility
Academy-approved Instructors must have a legal agreement in place with the Academy's training management company. This agreement must be in place prior to the beginnning of your training. As an instructor you must qualify under one of the following
- NAED (EMD) Training Site/Educational Facility (college or university)
- NAED (EMD) Academy-Accredited Center of Excellence (ACE)
After written contract approval from the Academy-authorized training entity that initiated the candidate's EMD Instructor training, and after having fulfilled all qualifications and prerequisites, the candidate shall successfully complete the following:
Instructor Academy Attendance and Participation
- The instructor candidate (IC) begins the instructor certification process by attending a four-day Instructor Academy held in Salt Lake at the NAED offices, 139 E. South Temple
- The Instructor Academy provides the teaching tools and insight for successfully presenting the three-day EMD certification course
- The candidate is assigned segments of the course to teach, and presents the information as part of the coursework
Course Team-Teach
- The IC team teaches one additional basic 24-hour EMD certification course taught by an Academy senior faculty instructor
- The IC is responsible for presenting the course material assigned by the senior faculty member prior to the course
Trial Training Course
- The IC must complete a three-day EMD certification course as the lead instructor with an in-person evaluation by an Academy-approved senior faculty instructor
- The senior instructor may minimally assist in teaching the course as necessary.
Evaluation
- A formal, positive, written evaluation and recommendation for EMD instructor certification by an Academy senior faculty instructor.
- The highest recommendation is preferred.
Continued Certification
Continued EMD Instructor Certification is based on attending a formal instructor recertification workshop (see explanation under the EMD Instructor Recertification section), assignment to an authorized training entity, as well as relevant employment.
EMD Instructor Certification
Complete EMD Instructor certification is awarded once the candidate has completed all training requirements.
In-House Instructor
This category denotes instructors employed by an agency that is an Accredited Center of Excellence (ACE). Teaching is limited to the specific center.
Site Instructor
This category applies to instructors employed by an Academy-authorized educational institution or EMS training site. Teaching is limited to the surrounding area, region, or educational sphere of influence as stipulated under the terms of a licensed training site contract.
EMD Instructor Recertification
The EMD instructor must complete the following requirements every two years to maintain certification.
Instructor Recertification Workshop
- The workshops are held at the annual Navigator Conference, and additional workshops are available at the Salt Lake City offices throughout the year.
Application and Verification
The instructor must:
- Submit a completed, formal instructor recertification application that verifies personal contacts and includes at least four EMD certification courses taught over the previous two years or at least two courses over the previous two years plus 48 teaching hours of continuing dispatch education (CDE)
Code of Ethics
- The instructor must abide by the Academy's Code of Ethics.
Payment of Fees
- There is a $90 fee payable to the Academy, which covers $45 for basic EMD recertification processing and an additional $45 for instructor certification. The fee is included in the tuition for the instructor recertification workshop.
EMD Instructor Decertification
Academy EMD instructor certification and other recognition is a privilege, not a right. Questionable situations the Academy may review can result in the denial, suspension, or revocation of certification or other recognition. Readmission is the Academy's sole discretion.
